John Brewster Jr.

BiographyJohn Brewster, Jr., was a deaf-mute portraitist and the son of a Hampton, Connecticut, doctor. He received instruction in painting from Joseph Steward (1753-1822) and possibly from Winthrop Chandler (1747-1790) of Woodstock. He specialized in full-length portraits early in his career, but later turned to a bust-length format. Brewster was also in the first class of the Hartford Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb in 1817. He was active in Connecticut, Maine, and Massachusetts.
