Asa JillsonAmerican, 1783 - 1848

Asa Jillson was born 5 September 1783 in Cumberland, Rhode Island. He was the son of Luke Jillson (d. 1823) and Anna Sherman Jillson (d. 1838). He married Anna H. Sabin on 2 April 1807 in Providence, Rhode Island. They had nine children, two of whom are Elizabeth Camilla (1826-1901) and William Lawrence Jillson (1807-1861). Asa Jillson was the grandfather of William Curtis and Caroline Louisa Jillson.

Asa Jillson resided in Dorchester, Massachusetts, from 1811 to 1828 and in Willimantic, Connecticut, the rest of his life. In Willimantic, he founded both a cotton mill and a dynasty of cotton manufacturers. He was the son of an inventor who successfully adapted hand looms to water power; Asa, in his turn, manufactured machinery for cotton mills. Asa Jillson's son, William Lawrence, and grandson, William Curtis, also manufactured cotton goods and machinery in Willimantic until the end of the nineteenth century. Asa Jillson died on 7 April 1848 in Willimantic, Connecticut. He is buried in Old Willimantic Cemetery.
