Royal Ralph Hinman

BiographyRoyal Ralph Hinman was born on 20 June 1785 at Southbury (or Roxbury), Connecticut. He was the son of General Ephraim and Sylvania French Hinman. On 14 September 1814, he married Lydia Ashley (1788-1853), the daughter of General John Ashley of Sheffield, Massachusetts. They had five children. Royal Ralph Hinman graduated from Yale in 1804. He studied law at New Milford and Litchfield, and practiced in Litchfield and Roxbury for twenty years. He held numerous elected and appointed offices, including representative in the General Assembly, judge, and Secretary of the State, which resulted in his removal to Hartford in 1835. Royal Ralph Hinman also wrote several historical works. He lived in New York City from 1852 until his death on 16 October 1868.
