Major Reuben Humphreys

Major Reuben Humphreys was born 2 September 1757 in West Simsbury (now Canton), Connecticut. He was the son of Honorable Oliver Humphreys and Sarah Garett Humphreys. He married his first cousin, Anna Humphreys (1758-1827), daughter of Captain Ezekiel and Elizabeth Pettibone Humphreys. They had twelve children.

He is buried in Marcellus, New York.

Reuben Humphreys served as private in the Revolution and fought in the Battle of Long Island. Between the years of 1784 and 1795, he was a captain, major, brigade major and inspector of the First Division of the Connecticut Militia. From 1796-1801, Major Humphreys served as Superintendent (sometimes refered to as Keeper) of the Newgate Prison in East Granby. In 1801 he moved his family to Onondaga County, New York, where Governor Moran Lewis appointed him as the first Judge of Onondaga County in 1804. He also served as a Representative to the Congress of the United States for New York and was a member of the Senate of New York. He died in 1832.
