Joseph Steward

American, 1753 - 1822
BiographyReverend Joseph Steward was born in Upton, Massachusetts, on 6 July 1753, the son of Joseph Steward and Jane Wilson Steward. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1780 and studied for the ministry with Dr. Levi Hart, at Preston. After he was licensed he became seriously ill; this illness plagued him all his life, causing him to give up the ministry. He became a portrait painter and a silhouette artist, active in Hartford, Connecticut, where he also opened the Hartford Museum.
On 31 May 1789, Joseph Steward married Sarah Moseley in Hampton. They had three children: Sally (called Sarah) (baptized 1790); Joseph (baptized 1792); and Mariah (Baptized 1796). Joseph Steward died in 1822.
