Colonel John Chandler

Colonel John Chandler (1721-1805) was a Probate Judge and wealthy farmer who lived in Woodstock, Connecticut, and Worcester, Massachusetts, both of which were originally in Worcester County, Massachusetts Colony. He was the second cousin of the painter Wintrop Chandler. Colonel Chandler was a Tory; as a Loyalist during the American Revolution, he was forced to flee in 1774, first to Boston, and subsequently to Halifax, Canada, and London, England. He was called "The Honest Refugee" because of his subsequent modest claims against the British government for the losses he sustained during the American Revolution.
