Horace Staples was born in Greenfield Hill, Fairfield, Connecticut on 31 January 1802. He was married on 29 November 1827 and commenced business that same year, by starting a lumber yard. In 1829, he built the house in which he lived for the remainder of his life (68 years); he was a widower for more than fifty years before his death.

Horace Staples ran a lumber yard, owned several farms which he leased out, and had a hand in real estate. He often went to New York to transact business. In 1884, he built Staples High School; the late Governor Cross was the second principal of the school. Horace Staples died in Westport, Connecticut on 6 March 1897.
