Governor John Cotton SmithAmerican, 1765 - 1845

John Cotton Smith was born 12 February 1765. He was a lawyer in Sharon, Connecticut, and he was a member of the Connecticut General Assembly and United States Congress. He was Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut from 9 May 1811 to 25 October 1812; acting Governor from 25 October 1812 to 31 May 1813 after the death of Roger Griswold; and Governor of Connecticut from 13 May 1813 to 8 May 1817. Governor Smith died 7 December 1845.
