Godfrey Malbone Sr.

BiographyGodfrey Malbone was a merchant who amassed a fortune in the slave trade. Born in Princess Anne County, Virginia in 1695, his family relocated to Newport, Rhode Island, in about 1700. He married Katharine Scott of Newport, daughter of John Scott; they had two sons and five daughters.

Godfrey Malbone's home, Malbone Hall, stood on the northeast corner of Thames and Cannon Streets, but it was destroyed by fire on 7 June 1766. He and his wife are buried in Trinity Church, Newport.
