BiographyRobert Treat was born in England in about 1622; he was at least two years old when he was baptised on 25 February 1624/1625 in Pitminster, Somerset, England. He married twice. His first marriage to Jane Tapp (d. 1703), daughter of Edmund Tapp, was on 22 August 1639. They had eight children: Samuel (baptised 1648-1716/7); John (baptised 1650-1714); Mary (1652-1704); Robert (1654-1720); Sarah (b. 1656, died in infancy); Abigail (about 1660-1727); Hannah (1660/1-1707/8); and Joseph (1662-1721). Robert Treat was the third husband of his second wife, Elizabeth Powell Hollingsworth Bryan (1641-1706). They married on 24 October 1705.
After coming to Connecticut, Robert Treat was first in Wethersfied, then in Milford. Milford was purchased from Native Americans on 12 February 1639; Robert Treat was one of nine people appointed to survey and lay out the land, even though he was not yet even sixteen years old. He returned to Wethersfield after this, and was elected ratemaker there in 1647. Soon after, he moved to Milford, where his son Samuel was baptised in 1648. Robert Treat's father-in-law gave him land in 1649. Although early records are scant or lost, Robert Treat is said to have held the office of Town Clerk in 1640, but records cannot substantiate this. Robert Treat became the eighth colonial Governor of the state. Governor Treat served for fifteen years, from 1683-1698. He died 12 July 1710.
