BiographyReverend William Ely was born in North Killingworth, Connecticut, on 27 June 1792. He was the oldest son of Dr. Richard Ely. After graduating from Yale College in 1813, William Ely taught in the Academy in Wethersfield. He entered the Andover Theological Seminary in Andover, Massachusetts, and was licensed to preach by the Middlesex Association of Ministers on 3 June 1817. On 11 March 1818, he was ordained; Reverend Ely was installed as pastor of the Congregational Church in Vernon, Connecticut.

Reverend Ely married Harriet Whiting (1800-1846) of Hartford, Connecticut, on 5 May 1820. They had three daughters and three sons. Reverend Ely was dismissed from the church in Vernon on 21 February 1822, and he was installed as pastor of the Second Congregational Church in North Mansfield in August 1825. He was dismissed from that church at his own request in 1841, and he moved to the adjoining parish of North Coventry. Later, Reverend Ely moved to Easthampton, Massachusetts, where his wife died in 1846. He continued to reside in Easthampton, but died in Worcester, Massachusetts, on 20 November 1850. Reverend William Ely is buried in Easthampton.
