BiographyJohann Friedrich Amelung (1741-1798) was born in Hettlingen, Germany. He anglicized his name to John Frederick Amelung when he immigrated to the United States. Amelung became the foremost producer of American glass in the eighteenth century. He operated the New Bremen Glass Manufactury in New Bremen, Maryland (near present-day Frederick, Maryland), from 1785-1795.
