George Wells Cheney Sr.

BiographyGeorge Wells Cheney was born in 1888, the son of Wells Wadsworth (1857-1938) and Lucy Compton Street Cheney (1859-1944). He married Katherine Goodwin Parker (July 24, 1890-June 24, 1973) of 183 Sigourney Street, Hartford, Connecticut, in 1916, then served in World War I. He had a daughter (b. 1917) who died in infancy and one son, George Wells Cheney, Jr. (1920-199?). George Wells Cheney Sr. retired as vice president and secretary of the Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Co in 1958. He was a lifelong resident of Manchester, Connecticut, and attended Hotchkiss School, and was graduated from Yale University, class of 1910. He joined the actuarial department at Phoenix in 1910, where he worked for three years before transferring to the underwriting department, where he was vice president in charge at the time of his retirement in 1958. He was secretary of the company for 22 years, vice-president for eleven years, and secretary of the board of directors for thirteen years. He was a veteran of the Mexican Border War of 1916, serving with Troop B Connecticut Cavalry, he was commissioned a first lietenant in 1917 with the 101st Machine Gun Battalion of the 26th Division and served on three fronts in France. He was discharged from the service with the rank of captain. George Wells Cheney, Sr. died in 1965.
