BiographyGeorge Wells Cheney, Jr. was born on 2 January 1920 in Hartford, Connecticut. His parents, Katherine Goodwin Parker and George Wells Cheney Sr., lived at 21 Hartford Road, South Manchester, Connecticut. He married Mary Frances Pope in 1943.

He was a graduate of Pomfret School, Yale University, a member of the Book and Snake Senior Society, and also attended Harvard Business School. Prior to his retirement in 1985, he was a vice president of Travelers Insurance Co. and was employed there for 38 years. After retirement, he was a partner in the consulting firm of Moreen, Cheney and Wall, Farmington.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, with the rank of Lt. Commander, serving on the U.S.S. Franklin, and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Tom's of Maine (a company owned by his daughter and son-in-law making toothpaste and other personal hygiene products).
