Samuel Kneeland

American, 1755 - 1828
BiographySamuel Kneeland, probably the son of Mercy Pepoon and Hezekiah Kneeland of Colchester, may have received his training in Springfield, Massachusetts. He is likely the same Samuel Kneeland "of Hartford" who married Naomi Bliss (1765-1840) of Springfield in 1787. Kneeland's earliest known advertisement, was issued in 1786 in the American Mercury when he was working independently in Hartford at the age of 31. Between October 1792 and and March 1795 he was a member of the firm Kneeland & Adams, with Lemuel Adams. In 1797 he moved his shop to Farmington, Connecticut. He probably moved to Genesea, New York shortly after 1800.
