BiographyThe pottery Homer Laughlin China Company had its origin in 1869 when Homer Laughlin went to East Liverpool, Ohio, and began a partnership with Nathaniel Simms. The two worked together until 1872 making yellowware and stoneware. Simms eventually left the partnership, and in 1873, Homer Laughlin and his brother Shakespeare made stoneware in a plant on Market Street. In 1877, Homer bought Shakespeare's interest in the company, making white granite and porcelain. Homer Laughlin China Company was the name from 1897 to the present. Homer Laughlin manufactured hotelware around the turn of the century, and for the government during World War I and World War II. Finally, in 1949, the company turned to manufacturing hotel china on a full time basis. Homer Laughlin operated plants in East Liverpool, Ohio, and Newell, West Virginia.
