Swan & States

American, 1824 - 1835
BiographyJoshua Swan, Jr., and Ichabod States were partners in the firm Swan & States at Stonington Point, Connecticut. In 1824, they took over the pottery at Stonington Point that was managed by William States. Their business continued for eleven years, until 20 November 1835, when State sold out to Swan for $1125. It is possible that Swan continued to make stoneware for a time after this. The Swan & States mark consists of "SWAN & STATES/ STONINGTON". The Stonington pottery site is at the foot of Wall Street (formerly Shinbone Alley), near an old wharf.
