W. S. George Pottery Company

BiographyBy 1904, W. S. George owned the controlling interest in a pottery in East Palestine, Ohio, which had begun making ceramics in 1880. George built a new plant to adjoin the previous pottery, called the Continental China Company. (Around 1900, W. S. George was involved in the founding of the Canonsburg Pottery Company, but also had a pottery of his own in the area. This pottery was associated with W. S. George, but not necessarily the W. S. George Pottery Company.) In January 1909, the names of the plants in East Palestine, Ohio, were changed to the W. S. George Pottery Company. From 1913 or 1914, the company also owned a plant in Kittanning, Pennsylvania. In 1955, the W. S. George Pottery Company went into bankruptcy. The individual potteries may have continued working until about 1960.
