Isaac William Stuart

American, 1809 - 1861
BiographyIsaac William Stuart married Caroline Bulkeley, the daughter of Stephen Bulkeley (1768-1841), in 1834. They had at least two daughters, Isabel Winthrop Stuart and Mrs. Grace Stuart Brocklesby. Isaac W. Stuart was a classicist, a New England historian, and a Federalist/Whig politician.

Isaac W. Stuart's father-in-law, Stephen Bulkeley, had purchased the Wyllys Mansion, the site of the Charter Oak, after Hezekiah Wyllys died in 1827. Stephen Bulkeley tore the house down and built a new home, the Bulkeley house, on the site. After Stephen Bulkeley died in 1841, Isaac and Caroline Stuart lived in the home, and Isaac W. Stuart controlled the flow of wood from the Charter Oak tree.
