BiographyThe Leeds Pottery was established in 1758, and only a small portion of its wares have marks. Leeds clay was known for being lightweight and white, therefore providing an ideal base for lusterwares, especially silver luster. Between 1781 and 1820, the Leeds Pottery was under the ownership of Hartley, Greens & Co.; the company went bankrupt in 1820. Subsequently, the following potters or firms worked the Leeds Pottery: Samuel Wainwright, 1825-1837; Leeds Pottery Company, 1837-1841; S. &. J. Chappell, 1841-1849; R. Britton & Co., 1850-1853; Warburton & Britton, 1853-1861; Richard Britton, 1861-1872; R. Britton & Sons, 1872-1878.
