Limoges Porcelain ManufacturersFrench, founded 1771

Porcelain was first discovered in the area of Limoges, France, in 1768, and first manufactured in Limoges in 1771. Limoges was a natural site for the production and decoration of hard paste porcelain due to the kaolin clay, minerals, and other natural resources in the area. From the mid-nineteenth through the twentieth centuries, Limoges became a center for the manufacture and decoration of French porcelain. Many different companies were established in Limoges; the most well known is Haviland.

Note: Limoges porcelain was often purchased blank and decorated elsewhere, either professionally or by amateurs.
