BiographyJosiah Wedgwood I (1730-1795) left his partnership with Thomas Whieldon to become an independent potter in 1759 (generally considered the founding date of the Wedgwood company). From 1767 until 1772 he was in partnership with Thomas Bentley for the production of ornamental wares. In 1769, Josiah Wedgwood moved his pottery from Burslem to Etruria, Staffordshire, England.

In 1790, Josiah Wedgwood I (1730-1795) took his three sons, John, Josiah II and Thomas, and his nephew, Tom Byerley, into partnership. The firm was then known as Wedgwood, Sons, & Byerley. From 1790 to 1895 the proprietors of Wedgwood were: Josiah I, Josiah II and Thomas Byerley (1793); Josiah II and Thomas Byerley (known as Wedgwood & Byerley) (1795); Josiah II, John and Thomas Byerley (referred to as Josiah Wedgwood & Sons in constituent file, however, official name is uncertain) (1800); Josiah II (1811); Josiah II and Josiah III (1823); Josiah II with his sons Josiah III and Francis (1827); Josiah III and Francis (1841); Francis (1842); Francis and John Boyle (1843); Francis (1845); Francis and Robert Brown (1846); Francis and Robert Brown 1850); Francis with his son Godfrey (1859); Francis with his sons Godfrey and Clement Francis (1863); Francis with his sons Godfrey, Clement Francis and Lawrence (1868); Godfrey with his brothers Clement Francis and Lawrence (1870); Lawrence, with his nephews Cecil and Francis Hamilton (1891). Incorporated as Josiah Wedgwood & Sons Ltd. in 1895.
