James Tams was most likely a merchant who imported the earthenwares of John & George Alcock for sale in Philadelphia. James Tams' father, William Tams of Staffordshire, England, and Trenton, New Jersey, is associated with the 1868 founding of the Greenwood Pottery in Trenton, New Jersey. James Tams took over the operation when William died in 1866.
