BiographyJames Goodwin Batterson grew up in New Preston, CT, where his father owned a marble yard. About 1856, Batterson established a stone yard in Hartford and began producing cemetery monuments. He was also an importer and dealer in stone, a building contractor, and the founder and long-time president of Travelers Insurance Company. Following the Civil War, his firm specialized in the production of Civil War monuments, including monuments at Antietam, Gettysburg, and in many Connecticut towns.
