Edward Williams Clay

American, 1799 - 1857
BiographyEdward Williams Clay was a caricaturist, engraver, lithographer, etcher, and portrait painter. Although he was born in Philadelphia and was primarily active in that city and in New York, he visited Connecticut on at least one occasion in the mid-1830s, when he made drawings of the Charter Oak and the Old State House. D.W. Kellogg based a lithograph of the Hartford Iron Foundry on one of his designs. Clay's eyesight failed after a trip to Europe and he spent his last years as a minor public official in Delaware.
