Isaac Wright & Co.
American, 1831 - 1838
BiographyIsaac Wright & Co. was formed by Isaac Wright, a cabinetmaker and chairmaker in Hartford, Connecticut. Wright opened his furniture factory in partnership with Philemon Robbins and Joseph Winship in 1831. According to Sumpter Priddy's American Fancy catalog, "Isaac Wright and Company of Hartford, Connecticut, sold austere veneered Grecian furniture ... as well as colorfully painted Fancy pieces". After Wright's death in 1838, his partners formed the Robbins & Winship firm at 209 Main Street, Hartford. The firm advertised as dealers and manufacturers of furniture; they made coffins as well. For a brief period around 1877 the firm was known as Robbins, Winship, & Co. In 1878 the firm became Robbins Brothers, operating at 209 Main Street, and beginning in 1914 at 310 Pearl Street, Hartford. Robins Brothers are listed in the directory only as "cabinet furniture" until 1917 when their advertisement mentions "repairing, refinishing and upholstering". The last entry for Robbins Brothers in the Hartford city directory is in 1932 where they are listed only as "furniture dealers". Please see text entries for a list of dates and pages numbers where some of the firms are listed in the Hartford city directories.
