William States

William States came from a family of potters; he was the son of Peter States and the cousin of Adam States. He first appeared in the records in Stonington, Connecticut, on 21 January 1799, when, at age 21, he purchased land from his brother Joseph. At the time, William and Joseph States both lived in Providence. William States does not appear in records again until 5 January 1810, when James Chesebrough sold him land and a house at Stonington Point; States paid $700 for the pottery works. The Stonington Point pottery was run and managed by William States until he died in October 1823, and his name appears upon the stoneware made before that time.
