BiographyMary Todd was born in Lexington, Kentucky on 13 December 1818. She was the fourth child of Eliza Parker Todd and Robert S. Todd. Mary Todd's mother died when she was six, and her father remarried. She moved to Springfield, Illinois in 1839 to live with her sister, Elizabeth Todd Edwards. It was here that Mary met Abraham Lincoln, a lawyer and state legislator. She married Abraham Lincoln on 4 November 1842; they had four sons, but only Robert Todd Lincoln lived to maturity. Abraham Lincoln was elected sixteenth President of the United States in 1860, but he was assasinated and died 15 April 1865. After her husband's death, Mary Todd Lincoln lived in Chicago for three years, then went to Europe. Mary Todd Lincoln returned to the United States, again living with her sister in Springfield, Illinois. She died there on 16 July 1882.
