Enfield was one of the earliest Skaker villages, but in never grew very large. The community was at its largest at 250 members in 1850; it had a total of about 740 members overall. The Enfield property was sold in 1917 to the state of Connecticut, which converted most of the buildings into a prison. The remaining South family buildings are now privately owned.
