Jacob Sargeant

BiographyJacob Sargeant was born 28 February 1761 in Mansfield, Connecticut. He was the son of Hannah Baldwin Sargeant and Samuel Sargeant. Jacob Sargeant married Olive Payne of Canterbury, Connecticut, on 30 January 1785, shortly after establishing a business as a clockmaker in Mansfield. His first advertisement appeared in the Connecticut Gazette on 11 June 1784. In about 1787, Sargeant moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, where he continued in the clock and jewelry business. He employed his younger brother, Thomas, as an apprentice. In 1795, Sargeant moved to Hartford, Connecticut, where he expanded his silversmithing and jewelry-making activities. By 1800, Sargeant had a retail business which was one of the largest in Hartford; he sold his own silver, the silver of other makers, guns, and clocks. Jacob Sargeant died in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1843.
