BiographyJoseph Carpenter was born in Woodstock, Connecticut, on 4 July 1747, the son of Elizabeth Lathrop Carpenter and Joseph Carpenter. He may have apprenticed in Massachusetts before 1769, when he began work as a clockmaker and silversmith in Norwich, Connecticut, in the shop of his stepfather, Joseph Peck. In 1773, Joseph Carpenter leased land from the pastor of a nearby church and erected his own shop. He married Eunice Fitch in 1773. Joseph Carpenter died in 1804.
