Sergeant Major Robert Hale Kellogg

BiographyRobert Hale Kellogg of Wethersfield, Connecticut, was the son of Dr. Silas Root Kellogg and Lucy Church Hale Kellogg of Sheffield, Massachusetts. He was an unmarried apothecary when he enlisted in the Union Army on 11 August 1862. He was mustered-in as a private on 24 August 1862, was promoted to sergeant in May of 1863, and promoted again to sergeant major on 7 December 1863. Robert Hale Kellogg was captured on 20 April 1864 at Plymouth, North Carolina. He was held at Andersonville prison, but was paroled in November 1864. Kellogg was discharged 1 June 1865. Kellogg was the author of 'Life and Death in Rebel Prisons' (Hartford: L. Stebbins, 1865) which was based on his Andersonville diaries. His diaries are in the collection of the Connecticut Historical Society.
