Nicholas Disbrowe
Anglo-American, 1613 - 1683
BiographyNicholas Disbrowe was born at Walden, Essex, England in 1613. He came to Hartford, Connecticut, with Thomas Hooker, fought in the Pequot war, and set up shop at his house at the north end of Burr Street (now Main). In 1640, Disbrowe married Mary Bronson. He died in 1683.
Disbrowe was given credit for the construction of many Connecticut chests with carved floral motifs because of an inscription, "Mary Allens Chist Cutte and joyned by Nick: Disbrowe", that appears on a chest owned by the Bayou Bend collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (accession number B.69.356). The inscription is now believed to be a modern forgery; the attributions to Disbrowe are generally discredited.
