BiographyLouis Dwight Welch was born in Brooklyn, Connecticut in 1826. He had at least one older sister, Mary Clarissa Welch (Mrs. Henry Mason Cleveland). He graduated from West Point in 1845, was breveted second lieutenant of Artillery on July 1 1845, and received his commission on 25 March 1846. Lieutenant Welch served in the Mexican War (1846-1848) under General Winfield Scott and was present at the siege of Mexico City. He fell ill there, and was sent home. Lieutenant Louis Dwight Welch died in Saint Augustine, Florida, on 21 March 1848.
