Marc Bohan was born Roger Maurice Louis Bohan in 1926 in Paris, France. His mother was a milliner. He received a certificate in art and philosophy from the Lycée Lakanal in Paris. Between 1945 and 1958, Marc Bohan designed clothing for three fashion houses, Piguet, Molyneau, and Patou, as well as working briefly with Madeleine de Rauch and working as a freelance designer for a New York company. In 1958, the house of Dior sent Marc Bohan to London as director of English operations. He was recalled two years later to become chief designer and artistic director of Dior, succeeding Ives Saint Laurent.
