BiographyJoel Potter, the son of Martin Potter, was born 5 October 1800. He came from Wallingford, Connecticut. He purchased the home of the late Reverend William Robinson in Southington, Connecticut. He was the Constable of that town for several years and also had a store in the building later occupied by Joshua Bills.

On 23 April 1822, Joel Potter married Nancy Root, the daughter of Dr. Josiah Root. They had five children: Lucretia (1823-1844); Samuel Martin (1825-1846); Martha A. Bidwell (d. 1850); Charles Albert (1830-1832); and Anna Maria (1837-1852). On 27 February 1873, Joel Potter died in his home in Southington, Connecticut, at the age of 72. All five of his children had predeceased him.
