Julia Montaudevert

American, 1788 - 1865
BiographyJulia Montaudevert was born on 18 July 1788 in New York, the daughter of a New York City merchant of French descent. She married Captain James Lawrence (1 October 1781 - 4 June 1813) of Burlington, New Jersey in 1808. They had two children, a daughter who later married a naval officer, and a son who died in infancy. Her husband was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1813, but was killed on 4 June 1813 when his ship the Chesapeake lost a battle to the British frigate Shannon that had been blockading Boston. The words, "Don't give up the ship," which the mortally wonded hero is said to have uttered before he died became a popular rallying cry of the navy. Julia Montaudevert Lawrence died 15 September 1865.
