William Whiting Smith was born on 25 September 1851 in New Britain, Connecticut, the son of Levi Olmsted Smith (1818-1883) and Sarah Elizabeth Whiting (1829-1892). He had a sister named Francina Smith who married Phillip Corbin and a sister named Alice Mary Smith (1856-1935) who married Eben Channing Gridley (1846-1923) and lived in Chicago, Illinois. William married Alice Wetmore and became an officer of the Farmer & Mechanics National Bank in Hartford. The Smiths never had children. They lived for many years in a grand house on Farmington Avenue, before moving to an apartment in the Allyn House in Hartford where they lived for seven years. They then moved to the Hotel Manhattan where they had lived for three years when Mrs. Smith died in New York City on the 28 November 1912.
