Joseph Ropes

American, 1813 - 1885
BiographyJoseph Ropes was born in Salem, MA in 1813. He studied art in New York City with John Rubens Smith and in 1851 came to Hartford where he worked as a crayon artist and drawing master. He drew several lithographs for the Kellogg firm and in at least one instance transferred his own design to the lithographic stone. He was the author of several drawing manuals with lithographic illlustrations. In 1865, he left Hartford and went to Europe. On his return, he settled in Philadelphia. He later moved to New York, where he died in 1885.
