Dr. J. Grant Irving
American, 1907 - 1972
Dr. Irving completed part of his postgraduate studies in surgery in Scotland, at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and the University of Edinburgh. In 1934, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. During World War II, he served tours of duty in New York and Florida, as well as in Great Britain and northwestern Europe.
Dr. Irving went to Hartford, Connecticut, in 1935, as the Assistant Medical Director of the Aetna Life and Casualty insurance companies. By 1947, he was Medical Director, and in 1960, he was given the newly created title of Chief Medical Director. Dr. Irving also held positions in national medical societies, including: first Chairman of the Hartford County Medical Foundation; Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hartford Medical Society; President of the Hospital Council of Greater Hartford; President of the Hartford Medical Society; member of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States; and he served on many other boards and community councils. Dr. J. Grant Irving died in Hartford, Connecticut on 11 March 1972.
