Rear Admiral Roger WellesAmerican, 1862 - 1932

Rear Admiral Roger Welles was the son of Roger and Mercy Delano Aiken, born 7 December 1862 in Newington, Connecticut. He graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD in 1884. He married Harriet Ogden Deen in 1908, they had no children. He served on the USS Wasp in the Spanish-American War. After the Spanish-American War he attended the U. S. Naval War College. He served as a commander during World War I. He served as Director of the U. S. Office of Naval Intelligence from 1917-1919. He was promoted to rear admiral in 1919. He retired from the Navy in 1926, and died on 26 April 1932 in New York. His grandson was Roger Patton Welles.
