Robbins Battell

American, 1819 - 1895
BiographyRobbins Battell was born on 9 April 1819 in Norfolk, Connecticut, the son of Joseph Battell Sr. and Sarah Robbins Battell. He attended Yale University in 1839. On 15 August 1849, he married Ellen R. Mills, daughter of George S. Mills of Newark, New Jersey. They had one daughter. Ellen R. Battell died 19 March 1851. Robbins Battell represented Norfolk, Connecticut in the state legislature in 1852, 1858, and 1860. In February 1861, he was a delegate at the Peace Convention. He was also a State Senator in 1865 and the State Comptroller in 1866. From 28 May 1889 to 27 May 1890, he presided as President of the Connecticut Historical Society. Robbins Battell died in Norfolk, Connecticut, on 26 January 1895, at age 76.
