Donald J. Malia, Sr. began working on the NYNH&H railroad in late 1940 He worked for PennCentral, Conrail, and Amtrak. During the course of his career, Donald Malia first worked on the baggage car and with RR Express. He continued in that role on and off even into the 1950s, because it paid better than the ticket collector's job. He also served in the Cedar Street Yards in North Haven as a switch engineer, as a ticket collector, a trainman, an assistant conductor, and as a conductor. Donald Malia retired from the railroad in June, 1983, after 43 years.
