Hofer family

BiographyThe history of the Zweibelhofer (Hofer) family began with Frederick Adolph Zweibelhofer (1867-1956), who was born in Rostock, Germany. He went to New York City in 1887 during a world trip; he remained there, marrying Matilda Bernstill (b. 1872 in Germany) and opening a hair salon. Frederick Zweibelhofer sent for his brother Adolph, who opened a hair salon in Norwalk, Connecticut. Frederick and Matilda eventually left New York to open a salon in the country, and this brought them to New Britain, Connecticut. Three of the Zweibelhofer children graduated from New Britain High School.

During World War I, two of the family's sons enlisted in the military; Karl enlisted in the United States Army and Herbert enlisted in Naval Aviation. After World War I, the family shorted their name, becoming the Hofer family, and Karl changed his name to Carl. In about 1928-1929, the family moved to West Hartford, living in a home built by Carl and Herbert Hofer.
