Colonel Louis Richmond Cheney

BiographyLouis Richmond Cheney was born on 27 April 1859. He was the second of three sons born to George Wells Cheney (1825-1893) and Harriet Kingsbury Richmond (1823-1900). His brothers were Welles Wadsworth Cheney (1857-1938) and George Herbert Cheney (1861-1929).

He graduated from Hartford Public High School in 1879 and worked for the Cheney Brothers silk business for several years. He later served in the Connecticut National Guard (where he earned the title of Colonel) and the Governor's Foot Guard. Louis was active in politics, being elected mayor of Hartford in 1912 and State Senator in 1915. He was a member of many civic groups and served on numerous boards, including as president of Hartford Hospital for over 25 years.

Louis married Mary Alice Robinson (1856-1926) in 1890, with whom he had one daughter, Eliza Trumbull Cheney Roberts (1893-1958). After Mary's death in 1926, Louis remarried in 1933, to Margaret Bennett Crain (1874-1940).

He died on 17 December 1944.
