Sherwood Alfred Cheney

Gen. Sherwood Alfred Cheney was born on 24 August 1873 in Manchester, Connecticut. He was the son of John Sherwood Cheney (1827-1910) and Ellen Coates (1839-1933). He had five siblings: William Coates Cheney (1864-1941), Carrie Cheney (1866-1870), Frederick Cheney (1868-1870), Alice Elizabeth Cheney (1870-1969), and Emily Grace Cheney (1876-1953).

He was a graduate of West Point and had a long career in the military, serving overseas on multiple occassions.

Sherwood married Louise Delano (1891-1923) (a cousin of Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt) in 1921. They had one daughter, Matilda "Molly" Cheney Millard (1922-2016). After Louise's death in 1923, Sherwood married again in 1925, to Charlotte S. Hopkins (1885-1978).

He died on 13 March 1949 in Manchester, Connecticut.
