BiographyJulia (McWilliams) Child (15 Aug. 1912 - 13 Aug. 2004) was an American cooking teacher, author, and television personality. She is best known for her cookbook, "Mastering the Art of French Cooking," and the television program, "The French Chef."

She is the daughter of John McWilliams Jr. (1880-1962) and Julia Carolyn Weston (1877-1937). She had two siblings: John McWilliams III and Dorothy McWilliams Cousins. She was born in Pasadena, California. She attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. During World War II, she joined the Office of Strategic Services (OSS).
