Joel Hinman

BiographyJoel Hinman (27 Jan. 1802 - 21 Feb. 1870) was the son of Joel Hinman (1748-1813) and Sarah Curtiss Hinman (1762-1856). He had four siblings: Sarah Hinman Hall (1784-1854), Sophia Hinman Mitchell (1797-1861), Marietta Hinman Johnson (1803-1864), and Maria Hinman Pulford (1806-1897).
He married Maria Alathea Scovill (1805-1878). They had four children: Caroline Althea Hinman Goodwin (1827-1874), William L. Hinman (1833-1899), Eunice Scovill Hinman Abbot (1837-1904), and Mary Clark Hinman (1839-1875).
Joel Hinman served as a Connecticut State Senator from 1835 to 1836. He then served on the Connecticut Supreme Court from 1842, and as Chief Justice from 1861 to 1870.
