Bernard R. Sullivan grew up in Hartford, Connecticut. He joined the Hartford Police Department (HPD) in 1964. In 1982, he became the Chief of the Hartford Police Department. He retired from the HPD in 1989, but then became Commissioner of the Connecticut State Police until 1991. He was then the Acting Chief of Police for Central Connecticut State University. In 1992, he served as the Chief of Staff to the Speaker of the House, Tom Ritter, and stayed through two speakers until retiring from the public sector in 2000. He then worked at Tomasso group and retired as an Executive Vice President in 2006. In 2018, he was appointed as assistant to the President at Central Connecticut State University to update that police force’s policies and procedures.
