BiographyMary Jerusha Bulkeley was born on 27 September 1843 in East Haddam, Connecticut, the daughter of Lydia Smith Morgan and Judge Eliphalet Adams Bulkeley. She married Leverett Brainard on 11 November 1865 at the Pearl Street Congregational Church in Hartford, Connecticut. They had ten children including: Mary Lydia (m. Charles Cheney in 1894); Charles Edwin (1869-1889); Lucy Morgan "Lou" (married Lyman Bushnell Brainerd); Robert Leverett "Robin" (1874-1885); Albert Bulkeley "Bertie" (1876-1881); Morgan Bulkeley (married Eleanor Stewart Moffat in 1905); Newton Case (married Elsie Logan Burks in 1936); Edith Hollister (married John Henry Kelso Davis in 1907); Ruth Alberta (married Ralph Dennis Cutler in 1912); and Helen Sterling "Honey" (1889-1899). Mary Brainard served as director and president of the Union for Home Work, and was president of the Orphan Asylum in Hartford in 1904. Mary died on 24 July 1921 and is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford, Connecticut.
